Dog Fence Installation in Huntsville, AL

Dog fence installation, from a fenced backyard to a chain link dog run or kennel, quoted by independent local fence contractors through Huntsville Quality Fence. We pass your request along; we do not build fences. A dog fence is judged by one thing, whether the dog stays in, so height, the bottom edge and the gate matter more than the material. This page covers the physical fences and kennel runs a fence contractor builds, how they are sized for the dog, and what published guides say they cost.

Dog yard or dog run?

Most owners want one of two builds, and some want both.

Fenced dog yard

The whole backyard, or a section of it, enclosed with a fence the dog cannot clear, dig under or squeeze through. This is usually chain link, a privacy fence in wood or vinyl, or aluminum with tight picket spacing. Solid fences also block the view of the street, which calms some dogs that bark at everything passing by.

Dog run or kennel

A smaller pen, often 10 by 10 feet and 6 feet tall, set on gravel or a slab with a gate and sometimes a shade roof. Galvanized chain link kennel kits in the 10x10x6-foot size retail for roughly $285 to $760. A run gives a dog a safe place outside while the rest of the yard stays open, or keeps a dog contained on a lot too big to fence.

How tall the fence should be

Fence contractors commonly size a dog fence by weight and athleticism. These are rules of thumb, not veterinary standards, and a determined climber or jumper needs more:

DogCommon fence height
Under 25 lb3–4 ft
25–50 lb4–5 ft
50–80 lb5–6 ft
Athletic or jumping breeds6–8 ft

Height runs into local limits. Six feet is the common backyard maximum, and front yards are lower: Decatur caps residential front-yard fences at 4 feet, and Madison staff reports describe a 4-foot limit for solid fences in front setbacks. A tall dog fence belongs behind the front line of the house. See fence permits and height rules before planning anything over 6 feet.

Stopping diggers in red clay

Tennessee Valley soil is mostly red clay with a silt loam surface, often full of chert. Clay is easy for a dog to work once it is wet, and this area gets a little over 54 inches of rain a year. The bottom of the fence is where most escapes happen.

  • L-footer: wire mesh bent 90 degrees at the base and buried 12 to 18 inches outward, so a digging dog hits wire. Contractor guides put it around $1–$3 per linear foot.
  • Concrete footer: a mowing strip or curb poured under the fence line, about $8–$15 per linear foot in the same guides.
  • Buried boards or rock along the base, a cheaper middle ground on wood fences.
  • Gaps under 3 inches at the bottom and between pickets or panels, so small dogs cannot squeeze through.
  • Coyote rollers on the top rail for climbers, about $3–$8 per linear foot.

Every dig guard and post hole needs an Alabama 811 request at least two full working days before digging. Buried power, water and fiber lines run through most yards.

For large dogs, contractor guidance is 9-gauge chain link at minimum; 11-gauge is called too flimsy for a dog that leans, jumps or chews. Lower gauge numbers mean thicker wire. Black vinyl-coated wire costs more than galvanized and blends into a lawn.

Gates are the weak point. A gate that sags leaves a gap at the latch side, and a latch a dog can nose open is no latch at all. Ask for a self-closing hinge and a latch the dog cannot reach or lift, and for gate posts set deeper than line posts. See fence gates for hardware and post sizing.

Invisible fences are a different product

Buried-wire and wireless GPS pet fences are sold and installed mostly by pet-containment dealers, not fence contractors, and they are not covered here. One local rule worth knowing: Decatur's ordinance prohibits above-ground electric fences except for livestock in agricultural and RS-E districts, but it allows buried pet fences.

Dog fence cost

Published national ranges, not prices from us or any local contractor:

  • Professional dog-run installation averages about $800, with a range of $150 to $1,000 for a custom 3-by-10-foot, 6-foot-tall run (HomeAdvisor).
  • Integrated runs with a shelter: about $3,500–$10,000.
  • Chain link: $5–$20 per foot for materials plus $10–$20 per linear foot for installation in the same guide; other guides put installed chain link at $9–$30 per linear foot.

A full backyard is priced like any other fence of that material. See fence cost for per-foot ranges by type. Request quotes through the contact page with your dog's size, the footage and whether you want a run, a yard or both.

FAQ

Dog Fences: Common Questions

How high should a fence be for a large dog?

Contractors commonly suggest 5 to 6 feet for dogs of 50 to 80 pounds and 6 feet or more for athletic jumpers. Six feet is the usual backyard height limit, so check local rules before going taller.

How do I stop my dog digging under the fence?

An L-footer of wire mesh buried 12 to 18 inches outward, a concrete footer, or boards or rock along the base. Keep any gap at the bottom under 3 inches.

What size is a typical dog kennel run?

Kennel kits are commonly 10 by 10 feet and 6 feet tall, in galvanized chain link. Custom runs can be any size, often set on gravel or a slab.

Does a fence contractor install invisible dog fences?

Usually not. Buried-wire and wireless pet fences are mostly sold and installed by pet-containment dealers.
