Vinyl fence styles
- Privacy: solid tongue-and-groove boards, usually 6 feet. The most requested vinyl fence.
- Semi-privacy: small gaps or a lattice top. Lets some air through, which matters in summer and in wind.
- Picket: 3 to 4 feet, for front yards; within the front-yard height limits used by most local codes.
- Post-and-rail: two or three rails, for large lots and pastures.
Colors run from white to tan, clay and gray, plus wood-grain textures. Darker colors absorb more heat; ask the contractor whether the manufacturer limits colors for full sun.
What separates a good vinyl fence from a cheap one
- Wall thickness of rails and posts. Thin extrusions flex and crack.
- Rail reinforcement. Aluminum or steel inserts in the bottom rail keep long panels from sagging.
- Post setting. Vinyl posts are sleeves; contractors set them in concrete and often fill or reinforce gate posts.
- Gate hardware. Gates need a metal frame inside or a reinforced post, or they drop.
- Warranty terms from the manufacturer, separate from the contractor's workmanship warranty.
Why vinyl suits North Alabama, and where it doesn't
The case for vinyl here is wet ground and termites. Huntsville averages a little over 54 inches of rain a year, and Alabama is in the very heavy termite-probability zone. Vinyl ignores both. It also never needs the restain cycle that wood does in Southern sun.
The limits: vinyl panels come in fixed widths and do not rack to follow a slope the way wood or aluminum can, so hilly lots get a stepped fence with triangle gaps at the bottom. Spring storms can crack panels on impact, and a cracked board is replaced, not patched. Ask about replacement part availability for the line you choose.
Vinyl fence cost
National guides put vinyl at about $30–$60 per linear foot installed, compared with about $20–$50 for wood. Over a decade or two, the lack of staining narrows the gap. We found no Huntsville-specific vinyl pricing; local quotes set the number.
| Run | At $30 per ft | At $60 per ft |
|---|---|---|
| 150 ft | $4,500 | $9,000 |
| 250 ft | $7,500 | $15,000 |
A long vinyl privacy run can pass $10,000. Alabama's Home Builders Licensure Board licenses residential improvement work above that amount, so ask whether a state license applies to your job and check at hblb.alabama.gov.
Rules to check
No fence permit in Huntsville or Madison, a fence permit in Decatur, and HOA approval almost everywhere vinyl is common. Decatur's ordinance lists vinyl as an allowed material. Many subdivision covenants specify vinyl color and style, so get the approval in writing. See privacy fences for height limits by city.
