When a new fence can be stained
Pressure-treated pine arrives wet from treatment, and stain will not soak into wet wood. The usual test is to sprinkle water on a picket: if it beads, wait; if it soaks in, the wood is ready. Depending on weather that can take weeks to months. Cedar and kiln-dried lumber can be finished sooner.
Cleaning comes first
Gray wood is weathered surface fiber, and mildew grows on shaded fence lines in humid weather. Contractors clean with a wood cleaner or brightener and a low-pressure wash. Too much pressure raises fuzz and gouges soft pine. The fence needs to dry before stain goes on.
Choosing a stain
| Type | Look | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Clear sealer / water repellent | Natural wood, grays over time | Least UV protection, shortest interval |
| Semi-transparent | Color with visible grain | The usual choice; good balance of look and protection |
| Solid (opaque) | Paint-like, covers grain and mismatched boards | Longest color life, can peel instead of fade |
Oil-based stains penetrate; water-based stains clean up easier and dry faster. Many HOAs specify a color, so check before choosing.
Climate and timing
Huntsville averages more than 54 inches of rain a year, and August through October are, on average, the driest months, which makes early fall a practical window for staining. Stain makers typically want dry wood, no rain in the forecast for a day or more, and moderate temperatures. Midsummer afternoons in the 90s can make stain flash-dry and lap.
Staining cost
National guides put professional fence staining at about $1.00–$3.50 per linear foot in one source and $1.50–$4.00 in another, depending on fence height, both sides or one, cleaning and stain type. A 150-foot fence at those ranges is roughly $150–$600. We found no Huntsville-specific pricing.
If boards are rotted or posts are loose, fix those first; see fence repair.
