Swing, slide and solar operators
Swing gate openers
An arm or a buried operator pushes the gate open on its hinges, like a door. Single swing gates use one arm; double drive gates use two. Swing openers need clear space for the gate to arc open, and a driveway that slopes up behind the gate can stop a swing gate short.
Slide gate openers
A motor drives a chain or gear that rolls the gate sideways along the fence line. Slide gates suit steep or short driveways where there is no room to swing, and they are the common choice for commercial fences and security entrances.
Solar openers
Many residential openers run on a battery kept charged by a small solar panel on the gate post, so no power has to be trenched out to the end of a long rural driveway. Solar works well on open lots. Under heavy tree cover, or on short winter days with a gate that cycles many times, the battery can run down, and an AC-powered charger or a larger panel is the fix.
Sizing the opener to the gate
Every opener is rated for a maximum gate length and weight, and a heavy steel or wrought iron gate can exceed what a light-duty kit is built for. Two common residential examples, from the manufacturers' specs:
| Opener | Rated for |
|---|---|
| Ghost Controls TSS1XP (solar-ready, single swing) | gates up to 20 ft or 900 lb |
| Mighty Mule MM571W (solar-capable, single swing) | gates up to 18 ft or 850 lb |
A gate that sags or binds will overwork any opener. If the gate drags today, the hinge post or frame needs attention first; see fence repair.
UL 325 safety requirements
Automatic gates are heavy, and they can trap a person or a car. The national safety standard for gate operators is UL 325, and its current requirements took effect January 12, 2016. The key points:
- Two monitored entrapment-protection devices for each entrapment zone in each direction of travel. One is usually the operator's built-in reversing system; the other is an external device such as a photo eye or a contact edge.
- Monitoring. The operator checks its external sensors, and if a required device faults or is disconnected, the gate will not run automatically.
- Usage class. Class I covers residential vehicular gates serving one to four single-family homes.
- Speed. Horizontal slide gates may not travel faster than 1 foot per second.
Ask any contractor which devices they plan to install and where the photo eyes will sit, especially if children or pets use the driveway.
Opener installation cost
| Job | Published installed range |
|---|---|
| Swing gate opener | $1,200–$3,500 |
| Slide gate opener | $1,500–$4,200 |
| Solar gate opener | $2,000–$5,500 |
The same published source notes that many residential swing operators cost under $550 for the unit alone, a complete solar slide kit runs about $2,000 and up, and installation usually takes a day. The gate itself, columns, keypads, and trenching for power are extra. These are national figures from contractor sources, not local quotes.
Electric gate repair
Common failures are dead batteries, worn arms, misaligned or dirty photo eyes, burnt circuit boards after a lightning storm, and motors that finally give out. Published repair figures:
- Service call: about $75–$150
- Typical repair: about $550–$1,500
- Circuit board: about $135–$400
- Motor replacement: about $500–$1,200
Before calling, check the battery, the solar panel for leaves or pollen, and whether something is blocking a photo eye.
Rural drives, subdivisions and approvals
Openers are most common on long driveways in the county, on farm and acreage properties, and at the front of larger lots. Plan for a manual release for power outages and a way for emergency vehicles to get in. In the City of Huntsville, changes to the curb cut at the street go through a separate Driveway Curb Cut Application with Traffic Engineering. Electrical work can need its own permit, so ask the contractor who pulls it. HOAs often have rules on gates facing the street.
