Hartselle's own rules
Hartselle is a separate city from Decatur, with its own zoning and building department. We could not confirm whether Hartselle requires a fence permit or what its height limits are; call the city before building. For comparison only, nearby Decatur requires a permit and limits residential fences to 4 feet in front yards and 6 feet in side and rear yards. Properties outside city limits fall under Morgan County.
Downtown and newer neighborhoods
A 1916 fire destroyed most of Hartselle's oldest buildings. Downtown, along Main Street (SR 36), older homes suit wood picket or low aluminum fences along the street. Newer subdivisions around town ask mostly for 6-foot wood or vinyl privacy fences in back, often under HOA covenants.
Rural edges
Beyond the city limits, SR 36 runs 23 miles east to Lacey's Spring and 23 miles west to Moulton, and US 31 runs south toward Cullman. Acreage owners ask for farm fence, drive gates and long chain link runs. Old farm fence lines often wander off the deeded line; a survey is cheap insurance before a new fence goes up.
Building notes
- Red clay and wet winters: posts rated for ground contact, set deep, with concrete crowned to shed water.
- Termites: Alabama is in the very heavy termite-probability zone; keep soil and mulch off wood.
- Utilities: notify Alabama 811 at least two full working days before digging.
