Town rules, not Decatur's
Trinity was incorporated in 1901 and runs its own building department, so a Decatur fence permit or ordinance does not cover a lot inside Trinity. Decatur's ordinance is detailed: a permit, a 4-foot front-yard limit and 6 feet in side and rear yards. Trinity's building department lists forms for owner-builders, pools and commercial work but publishes no fence rule that we could find. Call Town Hall at 35 Preston Drive, (256) 353-2474, and ask the building inspector before you build.
Parcels just outside town limits fall under Morgan County instead. The fence permit guide lays out how the city, town and county rules differ across the area.
Why the town sits on the mountain
Planters began building homes on the ridge in the 1810s to get above the mosquitoes of the lowlands. A post office operated briefly from 1848 to 1853, reopened in 1866 as Trinity Station, and took the name Trinity in 1903. The result is a town of older homes on generous lots alongside newer subdivisions, which shows up in fence requests: picket fences and short front-yard fences on older streets, 6-foot privacy fences behind newer houses, and farm fence where the ridge opens into fields.
Wind exposure on a ridge
Higher, open ground catches more wind than a sheltered valley lot, and North Alabama's spring storms bring straight-line wind and occasional tornadoes. A solid 6-foot fence is effectively a sail. Options that hold up better:
- Shadowbox or spaced horizontal boards instead of board-on-board, to let air through.
- Posts set to roughly a third to half of the above-ground height, deeper at corners and gates.
- Galvanized steel posts behind wood pickets on the most exposed runs.
- Open styles such as aluminum or chain link where privacy is not the goal.
Ridge-top soil
Tennessee Valley uplands are mostly red clay weathered from limestone, sometimes with chert gravel mixed in. Chert slows augers and can mean a hole has to be dug wider. Treated posts should carry a ground-contact rating, since clay holds moisture against the wood through the wet winter months.
Before digging and getting quotes
Alabama 811 needs two full working days' notice before anyone digs post holes, owner or contractor. Then send your street, fence type and footage through the contact page. We pass it to an independent fence contractor working the Decatur and Trinity area, and you agree price and schedule with them directly.
