No city, county rules
Hazel Green was incorporated in 1821, let its incorporation lapse in the mid-1800s, and is today an unincorporated census-designated place (4,105 people in 2020). Fences fall under Madison County, whose residential rules exempt ordinary fences from a building permit; pools need a 48-inch barrier. Confirm details with the county inspection office. New subdivisions bring their own covenants.
Farm edges and new neighborhoods
Where a new subdivision backs onto working farmland, the line between them is often the first fence anyone builds. A survey matters here more than in town, because old farm fences rarely sit exactly on the deeded line. Common requests:
- Backyard privacy or vinyl fences in new subdivisions.
- Farm and horse fence, board or woven wire, on remaining acreage.
- Long chain link runs for dogs on larger lots.
- Drive gates at the road on acreage properties.
Storm country
Hazel Green was hit by an F5 tornado on April 3, 1974, by two tornadoes on March 2, 2012, and by an EF3 on April 1, 2023. Open country lets straight-line wind build, too. For exposed runs, ask contractors about post depth, steel posts and whether a semi-open design like shadowbox makes sense instead of a fully solid fence.
Near the Flint River
The Flint River, a south-flowing tributary of the Tennessee, runs along the northeast edge of the community. Lots near the river or its branches can hold water after heavy rain. Wet ground calls for ground-contact-rated or steel posts, gravel at the bottom of the holes, and care not to dam sheet flow with a solid fence tight to the ground.
Getting quotes
Send a request through the contact page with your road, fence type and footage, and whether it is a backyard or acreage job. We pass it to an independent contractor who works north Madison County. Every job needs an Alabama 811 request at least two full working days before digging.
