Rules out here
New Market has no city government, so Madison County rules apply. The county's residential rules exempt ordinary fences from a building permit, and pools need a 48-inch barrier. Four New Market sites are on the National Register of Historic Places, including the New Market Historic District, but National Register listing alone does not impose local design review the way a city historic commission does. Ask the county if you are unsure.
Farm, horse and acreage fencing
Pasture, hay ground and wooded acreage under the Cumberland Plateau outliers make farm fence the main job here:
- Woven field fence for cattle and goats, with H-braced corners.
- Board or no-climb wire for horses.
- Tube gates wide enough for tractors and trailers.
- Chain link or wood around the house yard, inside the farm fence.
Long runs cross creeks, draws and rock. Ask contractors how they cross water gaps and how they handle ledge rock and chert at post depth.
Cold, wet and the posts
New Market holds Alabama's all-time record low, −27°F on January 30, 1966. Real cold snaps are rare, but freeze-thaw and wet winters push on posts set shallow in clay. Set posts deep, crown concrete or use driven posts that compact the soil around them. Wood posts need ground-contact treatment; steel T-posts and line posts avoid rot entirely.
Septic and utilities
Sewer service is not available in New Market, so homes run on septic systems. A post through a septic line or drain field is an expensive mistake. Alabama 811 marks public utilities, not private septic lines, so find the tank and field lines yourself, and tell the contractor where they are, before anyone digs. Notify Alabama 811 at least two full working days before digging.

Send a request through the contact page with your road, acreage, fence type and rough footage. We pass it to an independent contractor who works northeast Madison County.
