Town limits or county
Gurley is incorporated, with its own police and fire departments, so properties inside town limits follow town rules. We could not confirm whether Gurley requires a fence permit; ask Town Hall before building. Many addresses around Gurley are outside the town and fall under unincorporated Madison County, where ordinary fences are exempt from a building permit.
Older lots in the historic district
A 1923 fire destroyed nearly all of Gurley's business district, but much of the town's older fabric survives, which is why most of it is a National Register district. National Register listing does not by itself impose local design review, but owners of older homes often want a fence that fits:
- Painted wood picket fences, 3 to 4 feet, in front.
- Low wrought iron or aluminum along the street.
- Privacy fencing kept to side and back yards.
Older lots were often surveyed long ago, and pins can be missing. Have the line confirmed before replacing a fence that has stood for decades.
Rural edges
Outside town, Gurley sits among farms and wooded ridges east of Monte Sano. Larger properties ask for farm fence, chain link dog yards and road gates. Rocky ground near the ridges and clay in the bottoms both slow post holes; ask contractors how they price difficult digging.
Getting quotes
Send a request through the contact page with your street or road, fence type and footage. We pass it to an independent fence contractor who works eastern Madison County. Alabama 811 needs notice at least two full working days before digging; the town maintains a small sewer system, and its lines are among those that get marked.
