No town hall: county rules apply
Moores Mill has no municipal government, so there is no town fence ordinance to look up. Fence questions go to Madison County Inspection at (256) 746-2950, which covers unincorporated areas only. The county's published residential rules require plans and a residential permit for a fence taller than 7 feet; an ordinary 6-foot backyard fence sits under that line. Pools are different: the county applies a 48-inch barrier requirement from its adopted pool code.
Mailing addresses can mislead. A Huntsville mailing address does not put a lot inside city limits, and the city boundary runs along the south side of the community. If you are unsure which side of the line you are on, check the property tax record, then read the jurisdiction notes in our fence permit guide.
What gets fenced in a growing suburb
The 2020 census found 2,752 housing units here, with almost all occupied. Census figures class about three-quarters of residents as urban and the rest as rural, so a single drive can pass a new cul-de-sac and an older home on a couple of acres. Fence requests follow that mix:
- 6-foot privacy fences in wood, vinyl or composite on subdivision backyards.
- Dog fences and kennel runs, often black vinyl-coated chain link with a buried footer.
- Fence replacement where the first builder-grade fence has started to lean.
- Split rail or field fence along the road frontage of larger, older lots.
Subdivision covenants come first
Without a city code, the rulebook that actually limits most Moores Mill fences is the neighborhood covenant. Many newer subdivisions set height, style, material and stain color and require architectural review before work starts. Send the approved drawing to the contractor along with your request; it saves a second round of quotes when the HOA rejects a style.
Red clay and spring storms
Northern Madison County sits on the red, clay-rich soils that weather out of Tennessee Valley limestone. Clay holds water against a buried post, and the area averages a little over 54 inches of rain a year, wettest in winter and spring. Posts rated for ground contact (AWPA UC4A or heavier), concrete crowned to shed water, and depth of roughly a third to half the fence's height above ground are the usual answers. On a solid privacy fence, spring straight-line wind is the bigger load, so corner and gate posts deserve the extra depth.
Before anyone digs
Alabama's damage prevention law applies to homeowners as well as contractors: request utility marks from Alabama 811 two full working days ahead, not counting the day you call, and keep machine augers away from the painted lines. In subdivisions, the fiber and power drops behind the houses are the lines most often hit.
Requesting written quotes
Use the contact page to send your subdivision or road, the fence type and an estimate of footage. We pass it to an independent fence contractor who covers Moores Mill and north Madison County, and you deal with that contractor directly on price and scheduling.
